2014 NCCAA Women's Basketball Awards GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Union University women's basketball team is just days removed from their 2014 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Title. For their efforts, two Union players and the head coach have been honored by the NCCAA.
LaTesa McLaughlin, a senior guard from Millington, Tenn., was named the NCCAA National Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Union junior guard
Amy Philamlee, from Jonesboro, Ark., joined McLaughlin on the all-tournament team.
Mark Campbell, head coach for the Union Lady Bulldogs, was named the NCCAA Coach of the Year.
Philamlee was also named NCCAA first team All-American for the second straight season. McLaughlin also earned her second All-American honors with an honorable mentioned selection.
McLaughlin averaged 10.5 points per game on the season, a career high for the point guard. She led Union with 161 assists (5.2/game) and 74 steals. She started all 31 games for Union and shot 42 percent (45-108) from 3-point range. She passed the 500 career assists mark this season. She finished her Union career with 943 points, 577 assists, and 530 rebounds.
Philamlee led Union with 17.8 points per game on the season, a career best for her. She was second on the team with 123 assists (4.2/game) and 32 steals. She led Union with 67 made 3-pointers, shooting 43 percent 67-156) from long range. She also led Union with 163 free throws made, shooting 87 percent (163-187) from the line. She passed 1000 career points this season. She ends her junior season with 1,336 points, 399 assists, 341 rebounds, and 163 made 3-pointers.
Campbell, now finished with 15 seasons at Union, has a career record of 481-66 (.879). In his 15 seasons, he has led his Union teams to a third place or higher finish in national tournaments 11 times, including each of the last 10 seasons. He has won five national titles of the six in women's basketball history at Union. Campbell was tops in the NAIA in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and this season's 2014 NCCAA National Title. He has two second place finishes in national tournaments, 2011 and 2012 in the NAIA. He has four third place finishes, 2002, 2007, and 2008 in the NAIA, and last season's 2013 NCCAA National Tournament.
