Link to GSC Release BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2014 FireSeeds All-Academic Team and Honor Roll for the fall sports season. Union placed 63 student-athletes on the honor roll and had eight selected to the All-Academic Team in their respective sports.
The GSC All-Academic teams are selected by Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken. The honor roll is a list of all student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA. There is no vote on the honor roll.
This is the first season for Union to be able to qualify for the all-academic selections. Union was allowed to participate in the honor roll during the last two seasons of the membership process. Union's 63 student-athletes on the honor was fifth best in the conference and was the top non-football school. This year's 63 total fall count is the highest for Union in their first three years in the league (62 in 2013, 51 in 2012).
