Link to GSC Release BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Union University basketball teams were very well represented on the 2014-15 Gulf South Conference Honor Roll and All-Academic teams. Union women had seven players on the honor roll, while the men's team had six player. On the GSC All-Academic team, Union had two of the five women's players to earn the honor including
Amy Philamlee and
Kelsey Risner. The men boasted one of the six men to earn the honor as
Felipe Rocha was tabbed for the honor.
The all-academic team is based on a vote from the sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives from the league and is based on academic and on the court production. A five-team men's and women's team is voted on, but ties are not broken so the men's team had six this year. Players with a 3.2 GPA and are at least a sophomore are eligible for this award. Union's Philamlee, Risner and Rocha made up three of the 11 total spots from the entire GSC group.
The honor roll is for any student-athlete with at least a 3.0 GPA. The women's basketball players included on this list include
Chelsea Bodiford,
Amy Philamlee,
Amber Rechis,
Kelsey Risner,
Bryanna Robinson,
Emily Sissom and
DeAnna Thompson. The men's players included on this list are
Thomas Greer,
Pedro Faller,
Eric Leisey,
Zach Phillips,
Felipe Rocha and
Tyler Stocking.
Union was fifth best in the GSC with 13 total basketball players overall on the honor roll. The three total all-academic players from Union was tops in the league along with Christian Brothers' three players. Union's six men's honor roll players was second best among all GSC schools, while the women's seven honor roll athletes was fifth best.
Union adds these 13 players to the 63 athletes that made the fall list. The spring honor roll will be release in late May.
