BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference announced their 2016 Firesides Spring All-Academic Teams and Honor Roll. Union University junior catcher Zach Wylie was named to the GSC Baseball All-Academic team. Union also put 37 student-athletes on the GSC Honor Roll, matching Union's high spring number of honor roll members (37 in 2013).
The all-academic team has a requirement of a sophomore and above with a 3.2 GPA, along with significant athletic contributions, and is voted on by the GSC sports information directors. The honor roll includes all varsity athletes with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Wylie, a 5-foot-10 junior from Collierville, Tenn., became the first Union baseball player to be named to the GSC All-Academic Team. He posted a .305 average with 31 runs, 51 hits, 29 RBI, nine doubles, two triples and four home runs. He is a Christian Studies major at Union.
Union put 37 student-athletes on the spring honor roll in four sports. The GSC sponsors nine total spring sports, but Union only participates in baseball, softball, women's golf and men's golf.
Union had 15 baseball players make the list, six men's golfers, four women's golfers and 12 softball players.
