BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference has released the 2017 Fireseeds Fall All-Academic Team and Honor Roll. Union University had seven student-athletes named All-Academic, while 57 student-athletes made the honor roll. The All-Academic teams are voted on and include athletic achievement, as well as, academic achievement, including a minimum 3.2 GPA and in second year of competition at the school. The honor roll list includes all student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA. The seven all-academic selections for Union is the second most (8 in fall 2014) in any of the fall, winter or spring selections. The 57 honor roll members is the fourth most for any fall, winter or spring selection dating back to 2012.Â
Union had three women's runners named all-academic including Janey Berends, Amy McKelvey and Abby Berends. Janey Berends was the only unanimous selection on the GSC All-Academic team this year. Abby and Janey Berends repeated as all-academic selections from last season, while Janey Berends and McKelvey also earned all-conference honors this season. These ladies helped Union to their second GSC Championship in the last three seasons.
Union put two men's runners on the all-academic team including Will Donelson and Jacob Whitney. Both Donelson and Whitney are three time members of the all-academic team, making the list each of the three years they have been eligible for the award. Both made all-conference this season, while Donelson was one of two unanimous selections on this year's GSC All-Academic team.
The Bulldog also put two men's soccer players on the GSC All-Academic Team including Connor Burns and Rodrigo Zonta. Burns is a repeat winner from last season's all-academic team.
Union put 57 student-athletes on the GSC Honor Roll list.
Men's cross country had five including Will Donelson, Alex Russell, Ben Noland, Forrest White and Jacob Whitney.
Women's cross country had 10 including Lindsey Jakeman, Abby Berends, Janey Berends, Rebecca Dalton, Sarah Fickley, Amanda Leatherwood, Amy McKelvey, Jordan Meadors, Gabbie Stevens and Rebecca Tankersley.
Men's soccer had 13 including Tomas Frischnecht, Cole Asfour, Zach Boothe, Connor Burns, Hugo Gaspar, Justin Hawkins, Cole Lewis, Lucas Lopes, Henrique Loureiro, Igor Luczensky, Joel Ronkko, Kyle Yeoman and Rodrigo Zonta.
Women's soccer led the way for Union with 21 including Jordan Alexander, Diana Barajas, Hannah Daniel, Austen DeLoach, Addison Dunn, Katlyn Dupree, Kristen Francis, Alli Herring, Sarah Hershbain, Hannah Hewett, Shelby High, Hannah Hilburn, Georgia Hopkins, Emily Mueller, Kayleigh Patterson, Jasmine Riley, Olivia Schmitke, Summer Senn, Brooke Watson, Kelsey Wilkes and Madison Wirth.
Volleyball had eight including Audrey Cagle, McKenna Carter, Jordan Davis, Alecia Funk, Hannah Huguley, Sarah McAlister, Deja Moorer and Abbie Rahn.
